WEST FARGO — When the COVID-19 pandemic began stifling busy lives around the world, teacher Katie Krumwiede began looking for ways to nurture her own creativity and she turned to cookie art.

Now, she is moving her hobby-turned-business into a shop that will be located at Pioneer Place, on northern Sheyenne Street, named Cookie Krums.

Although as a teacher Krumwiede could exercise some creativity, she started looking for a way to express that side of her even more. She began watching online videos of cookie decorating and from there, she was hooked.

“I’ve always been a crafty person and I love being creative and trying new things,” Krumwiede said. “From the second I finished my first cookie, I was completely hooked, creating this beautiful piece out of nothing and then all of a sudden it’s something really pretty.”

Krumwiede went on to take a year off from teaching fourth graders and began selling her artistic cookies that can be made to many different themes and ideas for anyone who wishes.

For example, Krumwiede will soon attempt to make a line of “Yellowstone” cookies based on the popular TV show based in Montana about a family’s battle to continue their ranching legacy.

Cookie Krums welcomes custom orders, including those for large events.

Krumwiede plans to open her first store front on Feb. 1, although her full kitchen will not yet be ready. However, with the new shop she will be able to combine her talents of teaching with cookies as she hosts cookie decorating classes, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Cookie Krums will also be offering take home Valentine’s Day kits that will include not only cookies but decorating tips and materials, as well as a game any couple can play.

Cookie Krums will fit right into Pioneer Place, which is already home to Thunder Coffee, Ferguson Books and Grateful Cratefuls. One can stop in for a cup of coffee before browsing books and gifts and leaving for home with a sweet treat.

“This is my first store front and I’m really excited,” Krumwiede said. “ I’ll be right next door to Grateful Crateful and I’m so excited to be with that whole group of people, they’re awesome.”

Krumwiede has created and designed cookies for special occasions and parties such as birthdays, weddings and baptisms.

“You name it and I’ve done it,” Krumwiede said. “It’s really fun to personalize and find a way that matches everybody’s personality.”

“It’s not your usual drop cookies,” Krumwiede said. “They’re more artistically designed.”

“I took off to pursue cookies and it has blossomed,” Krumwiede said. “So far I”m not returning.

Along with offering classes, Krumwiede said Cookie Krums will offer birthday party options that can include decorating led by an instructor or open cookie decorating so that each child receives a DIY kit and they are free to get creative with the decorating however they choose.
